A Grandfather Clock in Rough-Sawn Hickory: Discover the GRF-509

A One-of-a-Kind Grandfather Clock in New Haven, Indiana

When we received an order for the GRF-509 grandfather clock in rough-sawn hickory from our customer in New Haven, IN, we knew this would be a one-of-a-kind timepiece. Neither we (nor the customer) were disappointed.

This clock was built using rough-sawn hickory boards with a band-saw cut. This resulted in a straight rough-sawn pattern rather than rounded. The rounded rough-sawn pattern, which is produced by cutting the boards with a circular saw, was also presented to the customer as an option.

Our customer wanted the clock to blend in with existing furniture that had a rough-sawn texture and FC42000 Almond stain. After sending a wood and stain sample to the customer for approval, we found that we were able to produce a satisfactory color and wood texture match. While we don’t offer the FC42000 Almond stain on our website as a standard color, we can match almost any stain color if we have the stain name and number.

The customer chose polished brass as the metal color which included the pendulum, weights, and dial. The movement was a Kieninger MSU Triple Chime windup movement with an auto-night silencer and moving moon dial. The Kieninger MSU Triple Chime is the standard movement on our 500 series grandfather clocks. We also offer the option to upgrade to the Kieninger KSU which is a heavier movement that’s built for longevity and performance.

Here are photos of the clock in our builder’s showroom.

And here are video clips of the GRF-509 Grandfather clock in action.

The brass dial shown in the photos and video above is an intricately designed dial with a second hand located in the small circle (upper center), black hour and minute hands, a moving moon dial, three winding ports, intricate corner and center designs, and raised brass Arabic numerals. The weights feature an intricate band that compliments the designs on the dial. The chime selection switch is located on the right side of the dial near the 3:00 position and the chime silencing / auto shutoff control switch is located on the left side of the dial near the 9:00 position.

The three winding ports on the dial control the 3 weights. The center port controls the time keeping mechanism, and the outer ports control the chiming and striking mechanisms. When the clock is placed into silent mode, only the center weight will drop as it controls the time keeping part of the clock. The movement is a seven day movement, which means it only needs to be wound up once every 7 days.

The moon dial tracks the phases of the moon during it’s monthly cycle. It is an interesting feature that has been displayed on grandfather clocks for centuries.
